The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) already has sufficient authority to assess the safety of nanotechnology – but its regulation is not all to do with size, says Dr Annette McCarthy of the FDA.
Nanotechnology refers to controlling matter at an atomic or molecular scale measured in nanometers, or millionths of millimeters. In the food industry, the technology has a variety of uses including detecting bacteria in packaging, or producing stronger flavors and colorings.

The US Food and Drug Administration can regulate nanotechnology using its existing authority, but questions remain over the size of food ingredients, according to an FDA official.
Food Production Daily reports that Annette McCarthy, of the office of food additive safety at the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, is warning that food ingredients on the nanoscale could change the “identity” and the toxicity of the ingredient.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has said there is insufficient data to back the safety of the selemium form, Se-methyl-L-selenocysteine (Semethylselenocysteine), in food supplements.
Its Panel on Food Additives and Nutrient Sources added to Food (ANS) said positive trial results had been reported for Semethylselenocysteine as a source of selenium in in vitro genotoxicity assays, but many in vivo studies had turned in negative results.
It also said a lack of clinical trials was problematic and that the margin of safety submitted by the petitioners was “inadequate”.
