The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) already has sufficient authority to assess the safety of nanotechnology – but its regulation is not all to do with size, says Dr Annette McCarthy of the FDA.
Nanotechnology refers to controlling matter at an atomic or molecular scale measured in nanometers, or millionths of millimeters. In the food industry, the technology has a variety of uses including detecting bacteria in packaging, or producing stronger flavors and colorings.

THE Shanghai Food and Drug Administration will set up a Website offering information and consultations about food additives, and will also carry out research on the influence of a broad intake of food additives on the human body.

BEIJING, May 31 (Xinhua) — Chinese authorities Sunday pledged to use the new Food Safety Law as a platform to intensify monitoring and law enforcement, hoping to curb repeated food scandals battering the industry’s reputation and consumer confidence.
The law, approved by China’s legislature three months ago, will go effective on Monday to replace the current Food Hygiene Law.

As demand for olive oil falls and prices follow suit, the European Commission is considering support that would let beleaguered producers tender for aid so they can store their surplus.
Since the beginning of the 2008/9 marketing year olive oil prices have plummeted.
