Following a request from the European Commission for a scientific opinion on the use of polyglycitol syrup as a food additive, the European Food Safety Authority Panel on Food Additives and Nutrient Sources added to Food says there are no safety concerns when using appropriate levels of the syrup.

WASHINGTON – December 8 – Today, the Center for Food Safety (CFS) and the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) filed a petition with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) calling for the immediate withdrawal of approvals for all animal drug applications for arsenic-containing compounds used in animal feed. The 19th meeting of the Food Ingredients Europe took place between November 17th, to November 19th, 2009 at the Frankfurt Messe in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany. Hong Kong (HKSAR) – The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) today (November 30) announced the results of a recently conducted targeted food surveillance project on the use of the preservatives nitrate and nitrite in meat, meat products and cheese. One of the 500 samples collected was found unsatisfactory. Under the Preservatives in Food Regulations, no preservatives, including nitrate and nitrite, are allowed to be added into fresh, chilled or frozen meat.

November 20 2009 –  National Starch Food Innovation, the ingredients company that had been earmarked for sale by its Dutch owner AkzoNobel, has won this year’s Food Ingredients Excellence Awards main prize.
National Starch received the award for its ingredient N-Dulge FR, a co-texturiser which is said to enable the amount of butter, margarine or shortening used in cake recipes to be reduced by 75%.

FDA issues warning about sexual enhancement supplements

The US Food and Drug Administration on Thursday warned consumers about a sexual enhancement product sold online as a dietary supplement because it contains undisclosed prescription drug ingredients that could have potentially dangerous side effects.
Stiff Nights, a product sold to spur sexual enhancement and treat erectile dysfunction, was found to contain sulfoaildenafil, a pharmaceutical ingredient similar to the active ingredient in Viagra.
