Ongoing concerns about salmonella contamination of dry milk and other products produced by Plainview Milk Cooperative have forced officials to recall more foods which were made using the Plainview ingredients.
Plainview recently recalled its instant non-fat dry milk and other ingredients which were sold to food producers, but not available directly to consumers, due to the potential that the milk powder was contaminated with salmonella bacteria, a leading cause of food poisoning.

This week, the C. F. Sauer Company, of Richmond, VA announced the voluntary recall of its brown gravy, brown gravy with mushrooms, brown gravy with onions, turkey gravy, pork gravy, country sausage gravy, country style gravy, Alfredo sauce mix, Cajun gumbo mix, and Hollandaise sauce mix produced under the Sauer’s, Gold Medal, and Piggly Wiggly labels. The products were made using instant non-fat dry milk from Plainview. Plainview has recently commenced a recall of instant non-fat dry milk and other ingredients that have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria.

The recalled products were sold in foil packets and plastic jars in cartons of six to 24 individual containers in retail stores in 13 states, mostly in the South and the Midwest

Also this week, Traditions Meal Solutions said it is recalling approximately 104,500 packets of 25 gram non-fat dry milk packets which were made using Plainview non-fat dried milk suspected of being contaminated with salmonella.

Last month, we reported that Dunkin’ Donuts was suspending sales of its hot chocolate and Dunkaccino beverages because the beverages contain Plainview dried milk products that might have been contaminated with salmonella.

Salmonella bacteria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in frail or elderly people, young children, and others with weakened immune systems. Most healthy people infected with salmonella experience fever, diarrhea which may be bloody, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

However, in some cases, a Salmonella infection may reach the bloodstream and produce arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, and other severe complications.

The Food and Drug Administration says so far, there have been no illnesses associated with the Plainview salmonella recalls.
