TAKE it from Dr. Priscilla Chinte-Sanchez, our golden-yellow traditional rice wine, popularly known as tapuy in the north, is on a par, if not superior, to the internationally popular Japanese sake.
“In our study, we found out that our tapuy has better flavor and aroma than sake,” says the 72-year-old food scientist, now retired from the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), but who continues to chair the biological sciences division of the National Research Council of the Philippines.

The Beijing Food Safety Administration will conduct a three-month campaign on food safety from July 13 on to ensure food safety during the National Day celebrations.
An official from BFSA stated that, under the leadership of the municipal government; the health department; the department for industry and commerce; the quality supervision department; and the agricultural department of the city will each take measures that are complementary to each other to guarantee the food safety of the city by combining their daily duties with this campaign. China-Biotics, Inc. (NSDQ: CHBT) reported positive financial results for its 2009 fiscal year, which ended in March. Sales rose 28% to $54.2 million, and non-GAAP net income climbed 19% to $16.9 million, a very healthy margin of 31%.
Revenues were in line with analysts’ expectations, but net income, which equates to 99 cents per diluted share, beat the street estimate of 83 cps.
The company makes probiotic products, which it sells OTC (often through its own stores) and as bulk additives. China-Biotic’s Shining Essence product was responsible for 40% of revenues.

Just as the U.S. Mint redesigned currency to foil counterfeiters, the FDA is advising drugmakers on how to redesign their pills. The agency issued a draft guidance on special ingredients that would make it easier to authenticate tablets and capsules. “Drug counterfeiting is a serious public health concern,” Commissioner Margaret Hamburg (photo) said in a statement. “We look forward to working with industry to help ensure that consumers are not exposed to products containing unknown, ineffective, or harmful ingredients.”
