Reuters reports that Starbucks Corp, which has tried for years to jump-start a much-criticized food division, plans to revamp its menu at the end of this month to lure health- and cost-conscious consumers.

As part of its efforts to improve the quality of medicines and food ingredients worldwide, the U.S. Pharmacopeial (USP) Convention this week reached three new cooperative agreements with Chinese drug control authorities. Because Chinese manufacturers supply so much of the world’s drug and food ingredients, these agreements—coupled with three previous agreements between USP and other government organizations in China—mark a significant commitment to ensure that concerns about quality are addressed. Hong Kong’s Consumer Council has conducted a massive test on 40 samples of bottled water and found that Perrier, a water product of Nestle which is used as a complimentary drink by some star-rated hotels to their clients, contains a high level of nitrite.
It is learned that Perrier water sample contained nitrite at a concentration of 0.4 mg/L, which was in excess of the limit (0.1 mg/L) set in the Codex Standard for Natural Mineral Waters.

TasteTech has introduced a new 90 per cent version of its controlled release encapsulated sorbic acid to inhibit mould on bread, as industry seeks more ways to reduce formulation costs without impairing quality.
The encapsulation specialist has offered encapsulated sorbic acid for about the last 10 years in 35 per cent and 50 per cent versions.

The global manufacturing and economic slowdown will hit the specialty chemicals market this year, as spending declines 4% to $451 billion worldwide this year.
In a recent report, analysts at SRI Consulting forecast that “these economic conditions will continue until sometime in 2010 and then gradually improve…The specialty chemicals market in 2010 is estimated to reach about the same size as in 2008 and then gradually climb during the next three years to reach $530 billion in 2013.”
