Food, Cosmeceutical, Supplement Innovators to Converge at SSW 09

PHOENIX—Virgo Publishing announced the 13th annual SupplySide West, Nov. 11 to 13 at The Venetian & Sands in Las Vegas, will include more than 1,100 booths in the exhibit hall and nearly 90 hours of educational opportunities.

“With 1,100 booths and thousands of global supplement, food and beverage, and cosmeceutical companies attending, SupplySide West is the world’s largest event for healthy and innovative ingredients,” said Peggy Jackson, director of publishing, Virgo Publishing. “The exhibit hall, education program and networking make this a must-attend event.”

 

Three-Day Education Program

 

The education program, sponsored by Cognis Nutrition & Health, will begin earlier than in previous years on Wednesday, Nov. 11, to incorporate additional sessions focusing on science.        

Professionals from Avon, Amway Corp., Bayer HealthCare, Cadbury, GNC, International Dairy Queen & Orange Julius, The Hershey Company and many more leading companies are participating on the advisory boards.

Highlights include:

  • Featured speaker presentation by Ellie Krieger, author and host of Food Network’s show “Healthy Appetite with Ellie Krieger.”
  • Ido Leffler, president of Yes to Carrots™, will speak about organic labeling for personal care. 
  • Mintel International’s Lynn Dornblaser will present “You Are What You Eat: Trends in Cosmeceuticals.”
  • International Dairy Queen & Orange Julius’s William Barrier, Ph.D., and The Kellogg Co.’s DeAnn Liska, Ph.D., to examine how nutraceuticals are changing food innovation.
  • GURU Beverage Co.’s Ray Jolicoeur will discuss organic beverages going mainstream.
  • Nutrilite’s Amy Caplette to discuss preparing for, and surviving, a FDA GMP audit.
  • Global weight management ingredient trends and opportunities will be discussed by Christopher Shanahan from Frost & Sullivan.
  • FDA’s Vasilios Frankos, Ph.D., will discuss qualifying ingredient suppliers under new GMP (good manufacturing practice) rules.
  • NBTY’s Gerard McIntee to speak about education and ROI. 

Additional seminars will cover topics such as sourcing omega-3s, nanotechnology, advertising claims from FTC’s perspective, DSHEA 15 years later, berries and aging, immune health, supplements as pet food ingredients, digestive health trends and more.  A complete agenda is available on the show Web site.          

SupplySide West also features more than 40 vendor-sponsored seminars, VendorWorks, covering a wide range of innovative ingredients, services and technologies. A full schedule of the VendorWorks sessions is available on the Web site. Additional research can be found at the “Science at SupplySide” poster displays, which will remain up throughout the show. Poster presenters will be at their displays to answer questions on Nov. 13 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.  

 

Three Pre-Conference and Two Post-Conference Workshops Available     

 

On Wednesday, Nov. 11, Natural Marketing Institute (NMI) will present the “How the Changing Economy is affecting Consumer Attitudes, Behaviors and Usage of Supplements & Foods” workshop. Speakers in the “Energy Shots and Beverages: Growth, Innovation, Safety & Regulation” pre-conference workshop on Nov. 11, will discuss ingredient safety and activity, product launches and market trends, and regulatory issues. The Natural Products Association (NPA) is presenting “An Advanced Course on the Final FDA GMP Rule for Dietary Supplements“all day on Nov. 10 and half day on Nov. 11.

On Saturday, Nov. 14, two post-conference workshops are available. The “Stevia: Trends, Product Development and Regulatory Update” workshop and the “Probiotics: Market Opportunities and Consumer Trends” workshop, developed with the International Probiotics Association (IPA). Additional registration is required for each workshop.

 

Networking Events

 

SupplySide West also provides a variety of networking opportunities, beginning with the SupplySide West Golf Classic, sponsored by Pharmachem Laboratories. The popular tournament on Nov. 11 is returning to The Revere Golf Club and includes a $25,000 hole-in-one contest. Registration is still open. The networking continues the evening of Nov. 11 from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. with the Manufacturers Welcome Reception, sponsored by AmealPeptide. Hosted bar and hors d’oeuvres are included. When the exhibit hall closes on Nov. 12, all SupplySide West participants are invited to attend the Opening Reception co-sponsored by DSM Nutritional Products, Rochem International and SourceOne Global Partners. New this year, a Passport Drawing will be held at the Opening Reception and three attendees will win $250 Visa gift cards.  To participate in the drawing, attendees need to take the passport they receive in registration to the reception sponsors’ booths for validation, and bring the completed passport to the Opening Reception.

During exhibit hours, show participants are invited to showcase their golfing skills at the Virtual Golf booth, sponsored by Pacific Rainbow International. Three cash prizes will be awarded each day and a $1,000 grand prize will be awarded on Nov. 13.

The SupplySide Scientific Excellence Awards will be presented in the Virgo Publishing booth at 2 p.m. on Nov. 13. Awards will go to ingredient supplier/technology providers together with finished product manufacturers who have collaborated to develop an innovative finished product.

New this year, an audience of private equity, venture capital, angel and strategic investors will hear presentations from companies seeking capital investment and/or strategic partners in the Nutrition Capital Network Investor Meeting on Nov. 11. The presentations will be followed by meetings between interested investors and presenting companies.
